My daughter started lessons aged 5 (17years ago) wanted to ride from 2 yrs old but not allowed here. She has like one horse trainer said it’s like a fever in girls and never leaves them. She went to Jockey school, got horse exams etc, unfortunately trainers because we are not horse ppl never got the chance, had about a dozen races. But came home and is now settled into a racing yard and loving her work again. Has her own horse with her and lessons she has learnt at such a young age will stay with her for life. She is making her career with horses now getting paid well, and exercising horses everyday. It’s hard work but ppl say if you do what you love it’s not classed as work. It was a struggle as we had to pay to stable horse etc, but would do it all again in a heart beat

I have never regretted the time money or energy spent on my daughters passion. After 20+ years it’s still her life. It took her awhile but she now has 2 beautiful young horses that she bred and foaled living in her backyard. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live their passion. I’m grateful that i could help her arrive at this awesome journey

Your article made me jealous:) I do not have any children of my own and tried to get my two stepsons interested in riding when they were younger. I wanted us to have something that we could enjoy together, just us three. Alas, my horse enthusiasum did not rub off on them. As any “horse” person knows, you can’t make someone like horses. You either do or you don’t. Enjoy your horse time with your daughter. She won’t forget it, either!

Sounds like me when I was 4, and 5, and 6, all the way up to age 12, when I “finally” got my first horse.

I love this article. The author makes such important and valid reasons for encouraging her child to take up a challenging but fun and satisfying activity.
