Yep, some horses do need a good whack! Or a threat of one. If I ask my horse, “Do you want me to smack you?” he’s quite quick to listen. 🙂

If your horse is really lazy and won’t even think of moving (even if you swing the rope toward him and bring up your energy), sometimes it takes one good whack. You need to increase the pressure until the horse responds, and then instantly release the pressure once he does respond. My horse was this way and I tried just raising my energy level and swinging the rope faster and more intently, but until I whacked him once on the rump he didn’t make the effort. After that, he listened to just energy level and a small swing of the lead rope.

What should I do if I have a horse that is extremely resistant and won’t even think of moving even if I swing the rope and bring up my energy?

To be able to make my horses move without really moving at all myself is very handy, since i can move them in or out of the gate while still keeping the other horses in. It’s also good practice for light responses while working on the ground.
