I always find that the “walk, Halt, Backup” trick works even for babies and stallions, It is simple enough and just enough of a pattern that it’s not asking to much, but challenging enough to grab thier attention and hold it, I use it for my hroses ocasionally when they need a bit of a brush up on the respecting. It is an emediat attention grabber for the horse, just make sure you do it randomly and not in the same spots because doing it randomly forces him to guess and when he is guessing he is watching you carefully because he doesn’t want to miss anything.

Good point that if the horse is in your lap, he’s NOT trusting you to protect him! He’s just hoping that whatever scared him will eat you along with him! 😉
