Digital Image Quality: High Resolution

Digital photos should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots or pixels per inch) at 4×6 inches or larger. Many digital photos sent to Horse Illustrated are low resolution (72 dpi) and cannot be used. A low-resolution photo may look fine on your computer screen, but it won’t reproduce well on a magazine page.



To capture a digital images at the appropriate resolution, you must use at least a 3.2 megapixel camera with the resolution set on large and the compression or quality set on superfine. Taking a photo at low resolution and then increasing the file size in a photo-management program, such as PhotoShop won’t work: the photos must actually be shot at the highest resolution.



We can work from JPEG or TIFF files; bitmap (.bmp) files are not usable in print for the magazine.

  • I am a very very amateur.
    I have no idea as to the pixels.
    If I enter the contest or just send a pic that I took with my digital camera, will you tell me the number of pixels? Or how do I determine the # of pixels if I already took the photo?

  • I have been taking pictures for about a year now, but I have no clue how to find out how many pixels are in my picture. If I send you the picture that I am going to submit will you tell me how many pixels are in it?
