Florida horse owners are being advised to vaccinate to prevent EEE

Florida’s agriculture commissioner Charles Bronson is pushing horse owners to vaccinate their horses as the number of confirmed Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) cases is on the rise in the state.

Bronson says 45 cases have been confirmed in the first six months of 2008 in Florida, compared to just 11 during the same period last year.

EEE is a deadly disease that affects a horse’s central nervous system. It’s transmitted by infected mosquitoes and in most cases is fatal. A safe and effective vaccine against the disease is available.
