Nicole, if you’re not looking for a show helmet, you can actually find them super cheap. Look for a Troxel Sport. They’re not the prettiest, but they’re lightweight, ventilated to keep your head cool, and cost about $25.

This is a really good thing to do. I didn’t see the e-mail soon enough to do it but would love to buy a helmet but they are too expensive for me to afford. I fell off of my galloping gelding back last week and would have felt safer if I had been wearing a helmet. I really don’t want to be paralyzed and never be able to ride again. I don’t know how people cope.

I never used to wear a helmet. Then I got a young horse and decided now was the time. And I’m surprised to find out that I feel like Super Man wearing a helmet. I love it. I’m not afraid as much anymore! And I like the way your hair doesn’t get caught in every branch. You can go bustin’ thru the brush. It’s not such a bad thing wearing a helmet!

Thank you for the article. I ride Western and have been wearing a helmet for about 5 years. A friend of mine said to me that she just couldn’t do the “helmet thing”. I surprised her by responding that I wear a helmet. After we talked, she is much more open to the “helmet thing” now and I will forward this article to her.

Good to hear. I fell off a galloping mare this week during a rare time riding without a helmet. Although I was thankfully uninjured, I could have been killed or wrecked for life. I’m thankful for the wake-up-call to strengthen my 100% helmet policy. Just not worth waking up to not being able to talk, move, or think ever again.
