I’m so glad I go to read this article and some of the comments. I don’t own my own horse, but a friend of mine has a mare that’s foal date is tomarrow. I’m just on edge, hoping that the foal and mare will be all right. the mare is a chestnut paint and her last foal was a palimino paint. Unfortunately her last foal (was about 5) died on christmas eve this year. I hope her new foal will have a better life.

Sabrina, your comment made me feel soooooo much better!! My mare lost her first foal & we are now due the second. I am up now, reading articles & checking on her every 30 minutes..lol!! I am worrying so much about her & the baby, but I hope I wake up one morning soon to find her with a beautiful healthy baby standing beside her.

My mare was pregnant and I was on edge when she was due to foal I was always running outside to check her every hour then every few minutes I almost slept with her to make sure they both would be fine. My mare has had two foals before and lost both of them and she was in foal again and I was so worried. The night that I finally go to bed and get up early in the morning to check on her there she was standing next to her little one he was alive but there was problems she didn’t have any milk. Don’t worry folks the vet came out that day and we got her milk going and now he is one years old and healthy as can be..

I agree. All of my animals are rescues; however, I will be breeding my mare in a few years as she will become my children’s horse and I will have her baby.

I totally agree with PKL- there are too many backyard breeders and unwanted horses.

Great advise. I am not expecting a foal this year, because I feel unless, a person is keeping a foal, a mare should not be bred, just to sell it later, with the economy in such poor shape. I am the one who has brought alot of those unwanted foals from the “meat dealer”. People sell their foals at sales, and to people thinking that their baby will have a forever home, and a good share of those buyers are meat dealers or lookouts.
