Dressage at Devon under way in Pennsylvania

Every September, the dressage community focuses on the Pennsylvania town of Devon where the prestigious Dressage at Devon takes place. With classes for all levels, plus breed classes and an extensive shopping area, Dressage at Devon has become a popular destination for competitors and spectators.

For the first three days of the show, the breed division is held where individuals from more than 30 breeds are judged on their movement and conformation. The Born in the USA Breeders Awards recognizes American breeders producing high-quality sport horses. This year, a Foal Championship will recognize future stars in the dressage world.

For newcomers to the sport, dressage judging can be difficult to understand. A unique feature of Devon is Dressage with the Experts. Spectators can rent a radio that features commentary on the movements being performed and the judge’s scoring from dressage experts. Additionally, a series of educational forums will be held Friday through Sunday featuring topics in equine health and veterinary medicine.

The Fall Festival held in conjunction with Dressage at Devon is a draw for spectators and exhibitors every year. An extensive shopping area with tack, apparel and gifts, plus plenty of dining options that go above and beyond the usual horse show food options, are part of what makes the Devon experience unique.

For ten years, Devon served as a fundraiser for the Cancer Research Center at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. Currently, the show is partnered with Thorncroft Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Inc. and is a fundraiser for that organization’s work in hippotherapy.

The spectator-friendly event is open to the public. Tickets are $10 and children under 12 get in free. To learn more, visit dressageatdevon.org.
