The mayor’s statements are ridiculous. He has absolutely no right to say that these horses will be put out to retirement if they are privately owned. Is New York City adopting Communism?
Second, this is economic madness. Take working horses, ban the few jobs they still perform, and then shell out money to care for them during their “retirement”. I adore horse, and would like to see them used and appreciated by more people instead of shut away somewhere in early forced retirement.

I also know that some horses are overworked in these types of jobs, but taking the carriages won’t help anything! any driver that allows the horses to be overworked should be fired and in extreme cases filed for animal cruelty. there is more than one way to solve a problem and putting the horses out to pasture (or Lord knows where) solves nothing!

I understand the mayor’s concern for the horses (IF that really is why he made this promise, he may just be doing it because he does not like horses or the mess they leave on the streets)but the horses NEED this work! there is already fewer and fewer jobs for horses, especially sturdy horses used to pulling a carriage. where are these horses going to end up?! plus what kid goes and says ‘mommy I want to pet the old car!”?! these horses are good for so many things just by being where they are. they help the economy by bringing tourists, they keep the horse crazy dream alive in peoples hearts, they spark romantic flames in relationships,(after all what ‘s more romantic than a horse drawn carriage through the big city?)

Oh, this is too bad. Horses love working and I think most would prefer the life of actually doing something with their smart brains than being out on pasture 24/7 with nothing to do.

really carriage rides banned in NYC what are people thinking what will happen to those horses that work in the city will end up going to places no one wants to think of horses are livestock that are used to work not a leisure animal. I agree with you Brenda the Amish have been using animals in the same fashion for centuries and usually a lot harder than those in NYC and they are not regulated or banned is that going to be next find something better to do with tax payers money and time

Oh come on people, the Amish have been driving them for years and have put way more mileage on their horses then any of these. I don’t see having to do away with them as the answer, maybe making some changes would be a better approach.
