California Chrome, winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has suffered a cannon bone bruise, Fox Sports reports. The injury will likely keep him out of racing through the end of the year. He missed training due to the bruise and could not race at Royal Ascot or Arlington Park.

According to Fox Sports, trainer Art Sherman told Marcus Hersh of the Daily Racing Form that it’s possible California Chrome will “be retired to stallion duties.”

Hersh posted the following on Twitter:

Hopefully, this isn’t the last we see or hear from California Chrome.
