A voluntary recall of Western Milling’s Western Blend horse feed has been issued. The recall consists of the company’s 50-pound bags of the feed, from Lot 5251. The recalled product was manufactured on September 8, 2015 and distributed to stores in California and Arizona. The Goshen, Calif.-based company issued the recall after learning that the feed might contain monensin.

Horses who have been consumed monensin, depending on how much they ingested, may experience the following symptoms: colic, decreased exercise tolerance, depression, diarrhea, labored breathing, poor appetite and feed refusal of the grain product, rapid heart rate, recumbency, sweating, weakness, wobbly gait and sudden death. Symptoms usually first appear between 12 and 72 hours after the horse has ingested the monensin and may last around eight days. Horses who show adverse effects but then recover may have permanent cardiac damage. Some horses have died as a result of consuming the recalled feed.

The California and Arizona stores that carried the recalled product have been notified. There were 1,100 bags of the feed recalled; 67 of those bags still need to be reclaimed by the company. Consumers who purchased the Western Blend horse feed are urged to check if they have one or more of the remaining 67 recalled bags. The recall pertains to bags purchased in September 2015 with Lot number 5251. Consumers who have one of these bags should stop feeding it to their horses immediately and return the bags to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For more information about this recall, call Western Milling LLC at (559) 302-1062.
