Feed Recall

Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC has implemented a voluntary product recall of some of its horse feeds due to possible aflatoxin contamination. The recall involves feeds manufactured at three of its plants during specific dates. Those plants and dates are:
Statesville, N.C., between Nov. 3, 2007 and Feb. 8, 2008.
Harrisburg, Penn., between Jan. 1, 2008 and Feb. 8, 2008.
Guilderland, N.Y., between Jan. 1, 2008 and March 10, 2008.

The recall was initiated due to the possible presence of aflatoxin contamination above acceptable levels. Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by fungi. The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists aflatoxins in its “Bad Bug Book” citing that “aflatoxins produce acute necrosis, cirrhosis and carcinoma of the liver in a number of animal species.”

All dealers who purchased any of the recalled products directly from Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC have been notified. These dealers are located in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

To date, Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC hasn’t received any confirmed aflatoxin-related animal health complaints.

For more information about specific products included in the recall, contact the Statesville, N.C., feed plant at 704-924-5100 or the Harrisburg, Penn., feed plant at 717-737-4581.
