Homes for Horses Coalition Aims to End Abuse

A new resource tool for people interested in equine protection efforts has launched. The Homes for Horses Coalition, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to ending horse slaughter and equine abuse while promoting growth, collaboration and professionalism in the equine rescue and protection community.

The coalition is comprised of professionals working together, including member organizations such as: Animal Welfare Institute; The Humane Society of the United States; Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue; Best Friends Animal Society; Habitat for Horses; and the United Animal Nations.

In mid-February, the Homes for Horses Coalition launched a website, www.homesforhorses.org, designed to be a resource tool for the general public.

“We’re excited about the launch of our website and what it offers to the rapidly growing body of equine welfare professionals. Our coalition has a great deal of expertise to share with others interested in real equine welfare, from lobbying Congress to end horse slaughter to providing high-quality care to horses in need. This should be a first point of reference for anyone interested in these issues,” says Liz Ross, federal policy advisor for the Animal Welfare Institute.

“Our cumulative expertise puts the Homes for Horses Coalition in a unique position to advocate for equines from a perspective that puts equine welfare above commercial interests. Now, through our website we have the opportunity to share our knowledge with a much larger audience,” says Keith Dane, director of equine protection for The Humane Society of the United States.

Founded in 2007, the Homes for Horses Coalition will hold its annual conference in Washington, D.C. on July 22, 2008.
