Scholarship Funded from Racehorse Earnings

A Thoroughbred race horse named Fleet Indian was declared 2006 New York Older Female Champion and 2006 New York Horse of the Year. The big-hearted mare won $1.7 million during her racing career.  Mr. Paul Saylor, the owner of Fleet Indian, happens to be a board member of The Race for Education, which has provided 120 four-year college scholarships—that’s nearly $1.5 million—to students who intend to make a career in the equine and agricultural industries.  The Race for Education established the Fleet Indian Scholarship Program specifically for students in New York State who hope to pursue a career in the racing industry. The scholarship is funded in part by Fleet Indian’s winnings on the track, which were donated by Saylor. The first recipient, Sarah Jones, is from Middleport, N.Y., and will be attending college to pursue equine science with an objective of becoming a thoroughbred horse trainer.
