Popular Racing Gelding Suffers Injury

The Thoroughbred gelding named The Tin Man has won more than $3.6 million in seven years of racing. But now he’s facing an even tougher foe. The pretty bay with the sweet face underwent exploratory surgery on his front ankles a few weeks ago. Years of racing has taken a toll on the speedy horse, and the surgery was done to see if another season of competition was likely. Unfortunately, The Tin Man did not come out of the anesthesia well. He took an awkward step and wrenched his knee, fracturing it. According to his attending veterinarian, it’s a rare injury but one that is not possible when a large animal is regaining its footing after anesthesia. Currently, The Tin Man is recovering in a stall at Santa Anita and his leg is stabilized. He’s able to stand comfortably, but with his racing career over it will be interesting to see where The Tin Man spends his retirement.
