Pink for a Good Cause

The United Professional Horsemen’s Association (UPHA), formed in 1968 by a group of professional horse trainers who recognized the need for an organization to improve the horse show industry, does more than just raise standards, it raises money for good causes.
In 2007, the UPHA introduced a program that engaged local communities and the horse show world. That year, the UPHA launched its inaugural UPHA Pink Ribbon Class to raise much-needed funds for breast cancer research, awareness and treatment. The class, which was held at the 2007 UPHA American Royal National Championship Horse Show, raised more than $16,000 and received enthusiastic support from the Royal attendees and Kansas City community.

The UPHA has continued these efforts and has organized its Pink program so that horse shows across the United States can participate in the effort.
Horse shows are asked to designate the Ladies Five-Gaited Championship for American Saddlebreds or Ladies English Pleasure Championship for Morgan horses (or stake/qualifier classes if the championships are not held) as UPHA Pink Ribbon Classes.

As a result, the upcoming 112th Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, which begins May 22 in Devon, Pa., has designated its Ladies Five-Gaited class held on May 28 as its Pink class.

A class schedule for the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show, which begins Oct. 4, hasn’t yet been published, but spectators can expect some pink ribbons during the Ladies English Pleasure Championship.
