Online Tack and Horse Equipment Guide: Peacock Stirrups

Peacock Stirrups: Young English riders are encouraged to use peacock stirrups. Because of their design, a little rider is less likely to get a foot stuck in a stirrup in case of a fall or accident. A large, thick rubber band is attached to the outside branch of the stirrup iron. When undue pressure is applied to the rubber band—for instance, in the event of a fall—the rubber band disengages, freeing the rider’s foot.

  • Peacock stirrups are considered standard equipment for young riders, especially those in walk/trot and pony classes.
  • The rubber bands are easily replaceable if they become worn or lose their elasticity.
  • Remember: The rubber band goes on the outside branch of the stirrup iron.
