They board it, and have other people care for it. It isn’t even getting exercised….That doesn’t even make it a pet. At least a pet gets some attention. If you aren’t going to ride your horse, don’t buy it.
I totally agree with the other comments too- size does matter.

WHAT’S BEEN SAID HERE GOT ME THINKING SOME MORE, TOO. SINCE I ALSO JUDGE ABOUT A DOZEN OR SO HORSE SHOWS A YEAR I SEE QUITE A FEW RIDERS OVER-MOUNTED. IT’S NOT ALWAYS KIDS, EITHER. SOMETIMES ADULTS ARE GUILTY OF BUYING WAY TOO MUCH HORSE FOR THEIR LEVEL OF RIDING JUST BECAUSE IT’S WHAT THEY COULD AFFORD, NOT WHAT THEY TRULY NEEDED. QUITE OFTEN THE LESS FANCY HORSE IS THE MORE APPROPRIATE HORSE.

One girl i know who rides horse backed into an electic fence(by accedent) and when her horse jumped forward(from getting scocked) she gave her poor horse about a a dozen really hard wacks with her split reins when the horse was oviosly scared because it just got hit by an electic fence! And she teaches leasons to kids!

My pet peeve honestly is when people are given a mount that they CANNOT ride. Like a girl in my Pony Club. She used to have this huge draft cross and little pain in the butt pony that she could just muscle around. She now has a VERY sensitive thoroughbred and it’s scary to watch her ride him. He gets very very upset when she isn’t totally gentle and sadly it scares the girl to death. Some people… *sigh*

Pretty soon the horse’s head is flipping up in the air and its mouth is wide open but the rider is still hanging on. Usually their hand is up by their chin, too. And the big is some high port long shanked thing.

A) Someone who advertises to give lessons to kids who clearly can’t even balance on a horse themselves at even a trot. If I had my child in lessons, I’d want them to learn right!
B) Clearly unsafe tack. Doesn’t have to be fancy, but when I see a horse that clearly has a too-loose bit (or too-tight!) in it’s mouth, or a slipping saddle, I just want to scream!

I also hate it when I see people yanking back on the reins and kicking the horse at the same time. Every time I see it I have to yell at them not only for conflicting cues, but also for kicking the horse in the first place. I’ve also seen little kids bouncing up and down on a horse’s back at the trot, not posting, just having fun, like jumping on a bed. I didn’t want to be mean about it, because, they didn’t know any better, but the horse was clearly uncomfortable… so I “educated” them.

There are a few youtube videos that make me crazy because the riders are so over weight and the minis are struggling to turn properly.

I often have the same feelings but am not brave enough to say what I feel! 🙂 I will say, though, that you are lucky to live in a neighborhood where horses are so abundant! Out here in the country horses stay on their own properties and you never ever see them in town.
