Get to Know Adoptable Horse Breaking Bullet

Breaking Bullet is a 16.1 hand, 5-year-old mare (Bullet Gone Astray – Intermission by More Than Ready) that came to After the Races in partnership with Aftercare Charles Town. Bullet raced 38 times and made a little money in spite of only winning one race. After her last race in August, her connections decided it was time for her to retire.

Upon retirement she was evaluated at the track by a great vet (also a surgeon) who found her sound. She was then moved to a farm to await space to open up at ATR. Upon arrival there, she looked sound coming off the trailer and was turned out, but was of course hoof-sore a week later when ATR’s vet did her intake evaluation. Thankfully she does block to the foot so ATR hopes that with some TLC they’ll get her back on track.

ATR also plans to do a bit of physical therapy with Bullet to loosen up her neck, which was stiff for her evaluation. They’re hopeful after some good neck stretches and PT she’ll look much better when the vet comes back to revisit her.

Organization: Second Stride, Prospect, Ky.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Silver Kitty

A 12-year-old Thoroughbred mare, Silver Kitty last raced in 2017. Second Stride was not told of any injury history and she moves soundly under saddle. “Kitty” has had four foals, the last being in 2025. She is eligible for the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover Broodmare Division.

Kitty is a very kind and easy going mare. She seems to be intelligent and not concerned about much at all. She doesn’t mind being in a stall, as she stays quiet and munches on her hay. She is also fine being in a field 24/7. She gets along well with her friends and settles down quickly to graze. She walks nicely on a lead rope and is well behaved for grooming, bathing and tacking up. She stands quietly on crossties and enjoys being back under saddle.

She has a cute little trot, but her canter needs some refining. She would make a great lesson or beginner horse. Good for kids and grandkids, Kitty would make a perfect family horse and will be suitable for any age appropriate discipline.

Organization: Second Stride, Prospect, Ky.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Secret Crush

By Candy Ride and out of Elarose (out of the legendary mare Take Charge Lady), Secret Crush retired from racing in April 2025 with a left front suspensory tear with sesamoid involvement. He is currently on round pen turnout until August 18, 2025. He will then need an ultrasound done to determine if he is ready for turnout and riding. If he is sound in August under saddle at the trot, and stays that way long term, he may be suitable for low level sport use. He will be suitable for trails later this summer.

Crush is a fun gelding to have in the barn. He can be mischievous and playful. He is quiet when in the round pen and is quiet in his stall as well. He seems to be an easy keeper, is quiet for grooming, and walks nicely on a lead rope. He is respectful of his handlers and was good for the vet and farrier. He is well-behaved for the vet and farrier. He will be a fun horse to bring along and teach. He’s easy on the eyes as well!

Adoptable Horse: Breath of Royalty AKA Rook, a 10-year-old, 15.3hh Thoroughbred gelding
Organization: Second Chance Thoroughbreds, Spencer, N.Y.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Breath of Royalty AKA Rook

“Rook” is a sporty dude who is currently in training to get restarted and going. He is a project horse at this point, but coming along quickly under saddle.

In the time he has been in training, he has settled in, gained a ton of confidence and decided that trusting the process is worth it. He now walks, trot, and canters quietly, is happy to be caught in the field and settles right into his stall when he comes in. With shoes on and slowly building up his sport horse muscle, he stronger and ever more willing.

Rook is lovely, kind, and wants to be your best friend. However, he is a slow burn horse. He’s in your pocket once he trusts you. And he will let you ride and ride well, once he knows you won’t scare him. Basically, he needs to find a kind, talented rider who wants to go slow, build the relationship and show this kid the ropes of riding-based, off-track life on a timetable that makes sense for Rook. If you rush, it just won’t work. Rook’s carrots are very flexible to the very right home.

So, who does Rook need? Someone who wants to put in the time and isn’t hurried by show goals. Second Chance would prefer someone with a trainer and ample OTTB experience as well as someone with an arena. They think he’ll do great on trails eventually, but that’s a big ask right now. In an effort to set him up to succeed, Second Chance is hoping to find him a sport horse home with no deadlines and very flexible, accommodating training schedules. The program is certain that Rook will make all the “go slow” worthwhile.

At this point, Rook is available to a good rider with a trainer who understands Thoroughbreds. He could go in any direction; he’s certainly catty enough for eventing and jumpers, but he may also enjoy trails and a more easy going way of being. That said, despite looking like a kids pony, he is firmly not a beginner’s horse.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Deforestation AKA Wheels

*Please note this horse’s owner wants this horse placed in Maryland or states immediately surrounding.*

Deforestation, AKA “Wheels,” is a 25-year-old registered off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding seeking a home as a companion or training project for an experienced rider. Wheels was retired from racing in 2003 after 27 starts and career earnings of $14,505. When his owner took him on in his teens, he was used primarily for shows and lessons with more experienced riders.

Wheels hasn’t been ridden in about five years. Given the span of time, as well as his age and the fact that he can be a challenge to ride, his owner feels he’d be best as a companion horse in his new home. However, his owner would be open to considering an advanced rider looking for a training project to bring him back into work.

Wheels is an easy keeper, but does need his feed increased just slightly in the winter. He is currently barefoot, but his feet do chip and he can be ouchy on rocky ground, so he’d need front shoes if put back into work. Wheels sustained an injury to the inside of his right front cannon in spring 2023 that had to heel as an open wound. It has long since healed, but there is a good scar that remains. Other than that, he has been healthy in the years that his owner has had him.

This pretty boy ground-ties for grooming and picks up all four hooves with ease. He trots in-hand without an issue as well. Wheels is good for the vet, farrier, baths, spraying and loading. He prefers not to be stalled without buddies and is fine living outside 24/7. He gets blanketed in the winter. Wheels will be updated on everything prior to him going to his new home. He will also go with all of his supplies.

Meet Camp Hope, a son of Summer Front (by War Front) and out of Praising (by Pulpit). A stakes winner of $473,346 on the track, Hope is eligible for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover Competition.

Hope last worked on December 11, 2024 and retired with a left front suspensory tear. He also has a left front ankle chip that can be taken out if used for an athletic career. Additionally, he has an old splint fracture in the same leg. He can start under saddle at the walk only for no more than 20 minutes at a time through May 2, 2025. At this point, if he is sound in hand, he can begin no more than 5 minutes of jogging. He is still on round pen turnout for 60 days ending on June 2, 2025. An ultrasound will be needed at that point to determine his full turnout options if the suspensory has healed.

Hope is absolutely stunning with his almost black coat, diamond shaped star and beautiful, big, brown eyes. He is as kind as he is handsome. He does like to take things in and took about a day to settle into the farm at Second Stride; he seems intelligent and inquisitive. He is respectful of his handlers and is good for grooming and blanketing. He behaves well when being led but can be reactive to sounds. Second Stride expects this to improve as he settles in and gets turnout.

Hope is available to anyone now who can accommodate his rehab needs and will follow the recommended vet requirements.

Second Stride is hopeful he will be suitable for any discipline; however, this will be determined in June once the suspensory has healed fully.

Hope is very well-behaved under saddle. Even though he was nervous on his first ride, he kept his cool and listened to and trusted his rider and eased into his ride. This guy is just the sweetest, quietest, most intelligent guy you could ever want.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Sunset Dragunn

Sunset Dragunn is a Retired Racehorse Project-eligible 11-year-old dark bay Thoroughbred gelding standing just over 16 hands. This handsome war horse boasts 60 starts and nearly $250,000 in winnings. By Bold Chieftain and out of Luke’s Finest (by Indian Charlie), Dragunn has a wealth of experience and is looking for a loving forever home.

Dragunn retired sound from the track in September of 2024. CANTER’s veterinarians advise that he is best suited for a lower-level riding home (no jumping) based on fetlock X-rays (available upon request for serious inquiries). With his classic good looks, uphill build, and floaty gaits, CANTER thinks he would make a perfect lower-level dressage mount. He is up to date on vaccinations and dental care and does not currently require any additional maintenance.

Dragunn is a smart, sensitive horse. He has been ridden walk/trot/canter by a few different people while under CANTER’s care. He had only been with CANTER for about a month when he was used as demonstration horse for the mounted archery performance at UC Davis Horse Day. He handled the unfamiliar location, grandstand full of people, galloping horses, and sounds (including a cymbal) beautifully and impressed everyone with his professionalism.

His perfect person is an intermediate level and above rider in a training program. This rider is calm, confident, and consistent. Dragunn appreciates clear, fair expectations, and patience while he is figuring out what is being asked. He is a one-person kind of horse and is not suitable for a lesson program. He has a very sweet temperament and is a favorite among CANTER’s volunteers. They are confident that he will blossom with the right person!
