Get to Know Adoptable Horse Xanthus

Xanthus caught the eyes of many when he arrived as a surrender back in 2022. This adorable, 13.2hh buckskin was full of spunk and personality from the beginning. He loved attention from humans and was very intelligent, two qualities that still hold true today. It didn’t take long for him to become a favorite amongst the staff and volunteers at Longmeadow. After some time at the ranch, he was evaluated by their trainers under saddle.

Upon evaluation, Longmeadow’s trainers found that Xanthus had a hyper-sensitivity to poor saddle fit. They believe he has a history of ill-fitting equipment, which has now led to this sensitivity. After some training and a lot of patience from both their trainers and Xanthus alike, Longmeadow found that this pony does best in English saddles with a seat size of 15” and under. When being ridden under a saddle that fits him comfortably, Xanthus shows his true potential. He has gone on multiple trail rides at the ranch and does best with confident, balanced riders. His maximum carrying weight (including both tack and rider) is 165 pounds.

Xanthus is a mighty little pony and tends to be at the top of the pecking order in his herd. With our staff members and trainers, he is extremely personable and sweet. Since he has been known to test new people and handlers, he will require an adopter confident enough to be his leader. Xanthus has a “wants to please” attitude and would make the perfect pony for that perfect person.

Adoptable Horse: Monty, a 19-year-old, 14.2hh Missouri Fox Trotter gelding
Organization: Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, Union, Mo.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Monty

Monty came to Longmeadow this year after his previous owners could no longer care for him. He is a beautiful, gray Missouri Fox Trotter who caught the eyes of many when he came through Longmeadow’s barn doors. Monty is full of personality, up to date on his vaccines, and ready to find a home.

Upon evaluation by Longmeadow’s trainer, they found that Monty tended to have some discomfort while being worked under saddle. After a vet examination, they then found that he had thickening of his left hind suspensory ligament, which they believe is the result of overcompensating due to changes in his fetlock caused by poor conformation. Because of these findings, the vet believes Monty would be a great candidate for a lead line horse for your kids or grandkids, or someone looking for a horse for light riding. Monty would also be perfectly happy as a pasture pet or companion horse for your horse at home. Monty does require a daily Equioxx tablet to keep him comfortable.

Monty likes to have a job and aims to please. Longmeadow discovered that he typically requires an adjustment period to settle in, but once he becomes comfortable in his home, he’s a sweetheart. He can be pushy on the ground at times, so his adopter needs to be an intermediate horse handler who isn’t afraid to correct negative behavior and be his leader. Monty loves one-on-one attention with his handler, and would be a perfect addition to a home where he can spend his days eating hay with his equine friends and being groomed.

Monty’s maximum carrying weight, including tack and rider, is 175 pounds.

ASPCA Right Horse Adoptable Horse of the Week Klugman

Adoptable Horse: Klugman, a 5-year-old, 16.3hh Thoroughbred gelding
Organization: Second Stride, Prospect, Ky.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Klugman

Klugman is a 5-year-old Thoroughbred gelding by Practical Joke and out of Polyester (by Tiz Wonderful). He earned $146,140 in 17 starts on the track, and he is eligible for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover Competition.

Klugman last worked on March 16, 2024 and retired with two left hind small apical sesamoid fractures; Second Stride has the X-rays. He also has fibrotic myopathy on the right hind. This condition causes his right hind to move abnormally at the walk in colder weather, but it does not affect him at the trot and canter. It is similar to string halt. Klugman will be best suited for flat work and should not ever jump due to the sesamoid. He can get started back under saddle at all gaits.

Klugman is a handsome boy with a very kind disposition. He is quiet in his stall and when in the round pen. He does have a bit of energy to him on the ground but he listens well and is respectful of his handlers. Klugman keeps to himself in his stall and calmly sniffs noses of his neighbors without issue. He is turning out with other geldings and does well. He is a lovely boy inside and out.

Klugman did well on his first ride; he was willing and listened very well. He has a nice forward trot and walk. Klugman has a huge, balanced trot that is easy to ride. He would make a great horse for beginners to teach them how to post, as his trot pushes you out of the saddle. Klugman doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere fast and listens well under saddle. He seems sensible in the arena and isn’t spooky at all. A classy boy, he should be able to handle any level rider and take care of them. If you like the tall ones, then Klugman may be the horse for you!

Klugman does well in cross ties and is very good for grooming and saddling up. He is gentle enough for children to groom and may do well as a lesson horse.

Klugman stands well for the vet and farrier.

Adoptable Horse: Danger Ranger, a 5-year-old, 16.1hh Thoroughbred gelding
Organization: Second Stride, Prospect, Ky.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Danger Ranger

Danger Ranger is a 5-year-old Thoroughbred gelding by Animal Kingdom and out of Jelly Cable (by Sky Mesa). He is eligible for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover Competition.

Ranger last raced on July 3, 2023, and was retired due to arthritis in the left knee. He is currently sound for pleasure riding.

Ranger is a playful gelding who would be a wonderful trail or pleasure riding partner. He enjoys hacks around the farm and rides well alone or with friends. He is brave and does not spook easily. He would be suitable for a solidly intermediate level rider.

This gelding has a big personality and a huge heart. He is generally well-behaved; he walks nicely on a lead rope and is happy stalled next to mares or geldings in the barn. Ranger loves attention and needs reminders to respect boundaries. His adopter will need to be comfortable setting limits in a kind, firm manner.

Ranger gets along well with the geldings in his field and stood well for the vet. He does best with ample free-choice hay. Second Stride has not seen any vices from him.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Kiowa

Looking for a kind, older gelding to join your barn? You may find what you’re seeking in Kiowa, an estimated 20-year-old, 14 hands high grade gelding on the hunt for a home as a companion or light riding horse. Kiowa’s owner has had him for about 10 to 15 years. His life prior to that is unknown, but he was already trained under saddle. Since getting him, his owner has primarily used him for the occasional slow ride around the farm. He is now seeking a new home due to his owner having to move and being unable to take him and his buddies (Nikki and Dillon) with them.

When the Maryland Equine Transition Service visited, Kiowa was quiet for catching, leading and grooming. He picked up all four hooves with ease and stood well for fly spray, though he’s not a fan. It’s been about 4 to 5 years since Kiowa was last ridden, yet he easily accepted his owner getting on him bareback and walking around on a lead line. He may need a refresher, but the organization feels he’d easily move back into riding if that’s what is desired by his new owner.

Kiowa would do best with an intermediate rider to start, but could possibly be suited for a beginner to advanced beginner rider once back in the swing of things. Due to his age, he may not be suitable for anything more than an easy walk on the trail. The Maryland Equine Transition Service was unable to determine if Kiowa is gaited, but he does have the look and stance of a gaited horse.

Kiowa could also be a great companion horse for any herd. He is good with both mares and geldings, and has lived with younger horses as well. He is barefoot and lives out 24/7. Kiowa is updated on deworming and farrier. Price is negotiable to an excellent home.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Takoda

Meet Takoda! He is an extra special guy who is near and dear to the hearts of the Humane Society of North Texas staff and volunteers. They are so excited that he is up for adoption.

Takoda arrived at the HSNT ranch without his sight and a body condition score of 1. He immediately perked up and his spirits were lifted as we began to provide care and food for him. He started putting on weight and made friends with his pasture mates. He was an absolute champ for both of his eye removal surgeries and made an excellent recovery.

Takoda is now thriving. He is able to maneuver his pasture with his pal, Jack Black. Takoda stands wonderful for our vet and farrier. Despite his loss of sight, he is a very chill and charismatic guy. He would do best with a confident and experienced handler.

Takoda stands at 15.3 hands.

If you’re looking for a handsome and spirited companion who’s ready to embark on a journey of growth and adventure, look no further than Oakley. With his charming personality and boundless potential, he’s sure to capture your heart from the moment you meet him.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to welcome Oakley into your life and watch him evolve into the perfect equine partner.

Get to Know Adoptable Horse Blaze

Looking for a new friend to join your family? Blaze is a stocky, athletic Appendix gelding with a heart of gold. He’s 17 years young, and has a temperament as gentle as can be. This dude is a genuine sweetheart on the ground. He rides very quietly and you can tell he loves having a job.

If you’re ready to provide a safe and caring environment filled with love and attention, Blaze would love to be a part of your life. He has had chronic abscesses in the past and has slight navicular and white line disease, but with some shoes and daily care, he’s ready to do whatever is asked of him. Blaze is actively in rehab and needs someone willing to continue doing so.
