I just want to say this… As for myself and others I know as soldiers that have been broken and shattered “on the inside” by war. “The outside” of a horse while caring for, touching, brushing and riding absolutely has an uncanny ability of healing the broken bits. I guess unless you were a soldier with a soul that has been shattered by war you wouldn’t actually know that a horse has the power to do this would you?

The “outside of a horse” wasn’t meant to be taken literally, by anyone who has authentically spoken it. It’s a bit of poetic license for the effect of the phrase. I think most people who have spent time with horses will understand that’s it’s not about their hide; it’s about caring for the horse, grooming, feeding, riding, and understanding/knowing the animal. It’s about how developing a relationship with this horse will help you find something inside yourself that helps you understand love, commitment, and partnership in a new way.

That matches up with what I found, Ernest. Alas, I still see the quote attributed to Churchill all the time. It seems like Lord Palmerston will never get the credit (blame?) that he deserves for this one.

Well, 3 more clicks in Google, and comes out the Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine vol 53. from the first half of 1894. The author says it’s Lord Palmerston’s saying. The magazine is available in:

But as Churchill wrote this in the spring of 1895: “Polo progresses steadily and I am I think improving fast”, he could well have said this and his saying could well have found its way into a book printed in 1906…

“She never moved the stars from their courses, but she loved a good man, and she rode good horses.”
What more could any of us want to be said of us when we are gone?
