“Thundering hooves.” You’ve undoubtedly heard that phrase used to describe the sound of Thoroughbred racehorses galloping down the homestretch. But those dainty little equines probably sound like a light spring rain compared with the Shires competing at Lingfield Park Racecourse in Great Britain earlier this month. The two-furlong (quarter-mile) race was staged to raise awareness of the breed, which is considered “at-risk” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

Skip ahead to 1:40 to see the race begin.
